Summary When the first cantos ofℓLord Byron's "Don Juan" were first published anonymously in 1819, it was considered scandalous, but was also quiteℓpopular. The first edition of this book was published, also anonymously, as a criticism andℓmoral apology for Byron's poem. By the third edition, seen here,ℓByron had beenℓdead a quarter of a century. The author of the "apology" made himself known and added an additional canto to his original verse.
