Summary As Americans expanded further and further west throughout the early decades of the nineteenth century, they often settled in isolated areas lacking authorized houses of worship and ordained ministers. Led by itinerant preachers who frequently traveled wide distances, camp meetings became a common feature of frontier Christianity during this period. In this 1854 volume, Reverend James B. Finley provides a collection of sketches on western Methodism "illustrative of pioneer life," including memoirs of early itinerant preachers in Appalachian and Midwestern states; the history of the Western Methodist Book Concern, an early Methodist publishing house; and vivid chronicles of camp meetings.
