Summary Surgeon, scientist, minister, lawyer, doctor, alchemist and political rebel, Gershom Bulkeley (1635-1713) was a central figure in all the events in Connecticut during his lifetime. Single-minded in his pursuit of truth and justice, he was alternately honored and hated by his contemporaries. He played an important role in ending the witchcraft trials and he often defended the weak, the vulnerable and the unpopular. A man of letters, he left a vast archive of medical and scientific manuscripts.
