The Spartan commander Brasidas was already a veteran of many campaigns when he headed for the strategically important northern theatre. Cleon was the key hawk in the Athenian assembly who led his fellow citizens in a major effort to counter the impact that Brasidas was having in the north. The two finally clashed in battle outside the Athenian colony of Amphipolis which Brasidas had by then captured (the great historian Thucydides being exiled for his failure to defend it). The Spartans won but both men died in the fighting, their passing having far-reaching consequences for the subsequent course of the war. By focusing on the fatal duel between Brasidas and Cleon, and drawing on all available sources to supplement Thucydides' seminal account, Mike Roberts offers a valuable new perspective on the Peloponnesian War. 588 0 Online resource; title from PDF title page (EBSCO, viewed August 13, 2015). 600 00 Cleon,|d-422 B.C.|xMilitary leadership. 600 00 Cleon,|d-422 B.C.|xDeath and burial. 600 00 Brasidas,|d-422 B.C.|xMilitary leadership. 600 00 Brasidas,|d-422 B.C.|xDeath and burial. 600 07 Brasidas,|d-422 B.C.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01963097 600 07 Cleon,|d-422 B.C.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01812877 611 27 Peloponnesian War (Greece : 431-404 B.C.)|2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01353967 648 7 431-404 B.C.|2fast 650 0 Politicians|zGreece|zAthens|vBiography. 650 0 Generals|zGreece|zSparta (Extinct city)|vBiography. 650 7 HISTORY|xAncient|zGreece.|2bisacsh 650 7 Command of troops.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00869220 650 7 Generals.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00939841 650 7 Politicians.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01069915 651 0 Greece|xHistory|yPeloponnesian War, 431-404 B.C. 651 0 Amphipolis (Extinct city)|xHistory, Military. 651 7 Greece.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01208380 651 7 Greece|zAmphipolis (Extinct city)|2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01897041 651 7 Greece|zAthens.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01204474 651 7 Greece|zSparta (Extinct city)|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01896940 655 0 Electronic book. 655 7 Biographies.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01919896 655 7 Biography.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01423686 655 7 History.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01411628 655 7 Military history.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01411630 655 7 Biographies.|2lcgft 776 08 |iPrint version:|aRoberts, Mike (Military historian).|tTwo deaths at Amphipolis.|dBarnsley, South Yorkshire : Pen & Sword Military, 2015|z9781783463787|w(OCoLC)915331158 914 ocn915561202 994 92|bGTK
