Summary |
John Muir (1838-1914), whose writings about the natural world have shaped the conservation and environmental movements for more than a century, wrote this autobiographical account near the end of his life about his childhood in Dunbar, Scotland, his immigration to America (1849), his adolescence on a pioneer farmstead near Kingston, Wisconsin, and his student years at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. The Story of My Boyhood and Youth reveals the evolution of Muir's scientific curiosity and the beginnings of his reverential attitude towards nature. Treating his encounters with wildlife as high adventure, he gives especially informed attention to bird life in both Scotland and Wisconsin. |

The Story of My Boyhood and Youth recounts John Muir’s boyhood and his experiences growing up in nature. As a child, Muir suffered under his severe father, who scolded and beat Muir for not having read and memorized the Bible. To escape this world of trouble, Muir turned to nature for solace. His experiences exploring the outdoors soon led Muir to bring his love of nature indoors and to the knowledge and comfort of books. The young Muir began studying ecology, chemistry and biology. Eventually, Muir and his family left Scotland, choosing to settle in America. In America, Muir’s fondness for the wilderness continued to grow. Muir left his family in order to work as a mechanic, but he ultimately decided to attend school at the University of Wisconsin.ℓThe Story of My Boyhood concludes just after Muir leaves university without a degree, ready to learn under his next great teacher: nature. This edition of the book includes illustrations and sketches created by Muir himself. |
