Summary |
When Thomas Gaskell Allen and William Lewis Sachtleben set off on their journey around the world in 1890, they knew they were not the first people to have made the trip by bicycle. The pair did not intend to break any records; their sole purpose was to see the world. After graduating from Washington University, two young explorers began their 15,000 mile adventure. They began with biking fromℓSt. Louis to San Francisco. Allen and Sachtleben traveled alone the entire way and never used any sort of translators, and were therefore obliged to learn the languages of the places where they journeyed and communicate with the people who surrounded them. This book contains details from some of the most significant portions of their journey, specifically their travels from Constantinople to Peking. Also included is a selection of photographs taken by Allen and Sachtleben during their adventure.ℓ |
