Summary Sarah Orne Jewett wrote this history of her hometown, South Berwick, Maine, placing an emphasis on the years before 1814. Accompanied by numerous illustrations, this article was first published in New England Magazine and was subsequently reissued in a separately bound edition. Jewett's father often advised her to write what she knew, and her descriptions of the people and land of South Berwick are both entertaining and accurate. Because so many of her stories are concerned with the unique people and culture of rural Maine, this book offers a fascinating look behind the scenes of Jewett's fiction.
