Long before the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment, Americans of various political, social and religious backgrounds called for the end of slavery within the United States. In the 19th century, social reformers such as William Lloyd Garrison, former slaves such as Frederick Douglass and writers such as Harriet Beecher Stowe joined together in a renewed push for complete abolition.
