Summary |
When human error causes Middle Eastern oil fields to become radioactive, the world faces an immediate energy crisis. The sudden appearance of the asteroid Phoebe leads to a bold attempt by the United States to capture the object--and its potential as a fuel-rich resource--into orbit around Earth. But special interests, including the remaining oil producers, seek to block through any means possible America's plan to avoid economic dependency by mining Phoebe. Lerner's (Small Miracles; Betrayer of Worlds, with Larry Niven) near-future sf thriller features a plausible scenario that combines concern about the planet's diminishing energy resources with the current interest in asteroid mining and the potential danger of meteoric impacts. |
