Summary |
This early 20th- century adaptation of the iconic King Arthur legends is a fantastic read for anyone interested in knights, chivalry, magic and adventure. William Gilbert wrote this take on the tales with a juvenile audience in mind. He thought of the major Arthurian works like Malory’s “Le Morte d’Arthur” and realized that children would love the story if it weren’t for the aged and intricate writing style. He sought to rework the story to make it appeal to a young audience and specifically chose the elements of the stories that he thought would appeal to children. He simplified the language and excluded the mature and complicated themes. He transformed the setting into a magical world with powerful wizards and dangerous creatures. Arthur and the knights become shining figures of gallantry and chivalry. Gilbert’s hopes were that his young readers would be captivated by the tales and that when they grew, they would be inspired to read the classic versions. Additionally, the book is packed full of 16 stunning illustrations from celebrated illustrator Walter Crane. |
