Silver argues that anorexia nervosa, first diagnosed in 1873, serves as a paradigm for the cultural ideal of middle-class womanhood in Victorian Britain. In addition, Silver relates these literary expressions to the representation of women's bodies in the conduct books, beauty manuals, and other non-fiction prose of the period, contending that women "performed" their gender and class alliances through the slender body. Silver discusses a wide range of writers including Charlotte Bronte, Christina Rossetti, Charles Dickens, Bram Stoker, and Lewis Carroll to show that mainstream models of middle-class Victorian womanhood share important qualities with the beliefs or behaviors of the anorexic girl or woman."--Jacket. 588 0 Print version record. 648 7 1800 - 1899|2fast 650 0 English literature|y19th century|xHistory and criticism. 650 0 Anorexia nervosa in literature. 650 0 Women and literature|zGreat Britain|xHistory|y19th century. 650 0 Eating disorders in literature. 650 0 Human body in literature. 650 0 Body image in literature. 650 0 Sex role in literature. 650 0 Appetite in literature. 650 0 Hunger in literature. 650 0 Women in literature. 650 0 English literature. 650 0 Women and literature|zGreat Britain|xHistory|x1. 650 7 LITERARY CRITICISM|xEuropean|xEnglish, Irish, Scottish, Welsh.|2bisacsh 650 7 Anorexia nervosa in literature.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00809962 650 7 Appetite in literature.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00811574 650 7 Body image in literature.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00835358 650 7 Eating disorders in literature.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00901226 650 7 English literature.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00911989 650 7 Human body in literature.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01899762 650 7 Hunger in literature.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00964110 650 7 Sex role in literature.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01114649 650 7 Women and literature.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01177093 650 7 Women in literature.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01177912 650 07 Frau.|2swd 650 07 Anorexia nervosa.|2swd 650 07 Geschichte.|2swd 650 07 Literatur.|2swd 650 07 Geschichte 1837-1901.|2swd 650 07 Körper.|2swd 650 12 Medicine in Literature. 650 17 Letterkunde.|2gtt 650 17 Engels.|2gtt 650 17 Anorexia nervosa.|2gtt 650 17 Vrouwelijkheid.|2gtt 651 2 England. 650 22 Anorexia Nervosa|xhistory. 650 22 Culture. 650 22 History, 19th Century. 650 22 Human Body. 650 22 Women|xhistory. 651 7 Great Britain.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01204623 651 7 Großbritannien.|2swd 651 7 Englisch.|2swd 655 7 Criticism, interpretation, etc.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01411635 655 7 History.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aSilver, Anna Krugovoy.|tVictorian literature and the anorexic body.|dCambridge, UK ; New York : Cambridge University Press, 2002|z0521816025|w(DLC) 2002070883|w(OCoLC)49773789 830 0 Cambridge studies in nineteenth-century literature and culture ;|v36. 914 ocm52614119 994 93|bGTK
