Simultaneously, Anniston environmentalists sought to safely eliminate chemical weaponry that had been secretly stockpiled near the city during the Cold War. In this probing work, Ellen Griffith Spears offers a compelling narrative of Anniston's battles for environmental justice, exposing how systemic racial and class inequalities reinforced during the Jim Crow era played out in these intense contemporary social movements. Spears focuses attention on key figures who shaped Anniston--from Monsanto's founders, to white and African American activists, to the ordinary Anniston residents whose lives and health were deeply affected by the town's military-industrial history and the legacy of racism. Situating the personal struggles and triumphs of Anniston residents within a larger national story of regulatory regimes and legal strategies that have affected toxic towns across America, Spears unflinchingly explores the causes and implications of environmental inequalities, showing how civil rights movement activism undergirded Anniston's campaigns for redemption and justice."-- |cProvided by publisher. 588 0 Print version record. 610 20 Monsanto Company|xHistory. 610 27 Monsanto Company.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00510977 610 27 Monsanto Chemical Company.|2gnd 610 27 Umschulungswerkstätten für Siedler und Auswanderer |gBitterfeld.|2gnd 650 0 Polychlorinated biphenyls|xEnvironmental aspects|zAlabama |zAnniston. 650 0 Polychlorinated biphenyls|xHealth aspects|zAlabama |zAnniston. 650 0 Environmental justice|zAlabama|zAnniston. 650 0 Environmental health|zAlabama|zAnniston. 650 0 African Americans|xHealth and hygiene|zAlabama|zAnniston. 650 0 Working class|xHealth and hygiene|zAlabama|zAnniston. 650 7 NATURE|xEnvironmental Conservation & Protection.|2bisacsh 650 7 HISTORY|zUnited States|xState & Local|xSouth (AL, AR, FL, GA, KY, LA, MS, NC, SC, TN, VA, WV)|2bisacsh 650 7 BUSINESS & ECONOMICS|xInfrastructure.|2bisacsh 650 7 SOCIAL SCIENCE|xGeneral.|2bisacsh 650 7 African Americans|xHealth and hygiene.|2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00799620 650 7 Ecology.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00901476 650 7 Environmental health.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00912999 650 7 Environmental justice.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00913104 650 7 Polychlorinated biphenyls|xEnvironmental aspects.|2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01070331 650 7 Polychlorinated biphenyls|xHealth aspects.|2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01070333 650 7 Race relations.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01086509 650 7 Social conditions.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01919811 650 7 Working class|xHealth and hygiene.|2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01180464 650 7 Stadt.|2gnd 650 7 Umweltverschmutzung.|2gnd 650 7 Rechtsprechung.|2gnd 650 7 Rassismus.|2gnd 650 7 PCB-Belastung.|2gnd 651 0 Anniston (Ala.)|xEnvironmental conditions. 651 0 Anniston (Ala.)|xRace relations. 651 0 Anniston (Ala.)|xSocial conditions. 651 7 Alabama|zAnniston.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01218611 651 7 Anniston (Ala.).|2gnd 655 7 History.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01411628 776 08 |iPrint version:|aSpears, Ellen Griffith.|tBaptized in PCBs|z9781469611716|w(DLC) 2013041122|w(OCoLC)860944046 830 0 New directions in southern studies. 914 ocn870905268 994 92|bGTK
