Born in 1864 and raised by white slave owners, Carver left home in search of an education and eventually earned a master's degree in agriculture. In 1896, he was invited by Booker T. Washington to head the agricultural department at the all-black-staffed Tuskegee Institute. There he conducted innovative research to find uses for crops such as cowpeas, sweet potatoes, and peanuts, while seeking solutions to the plight of landless black farmers. Through 44 poems, told from the point of view of Carver and the people who knew him, Nelson celebrates his character and accomplishments. She includes prose summaries of events and archival photographs.--Publisher information. 526 0 Accelerated Reader|bGrades 9-12|c5.9|d1|xSD|zQuiz 59113 |zEnglish fiction, vocabulary quiz available. 586 Newbery Honor Book, 2002. 586 Coretta Scott King Honor, author, 2002. 586 John Newbery honor award 586 National book award finalist 586 Boston Globe/Horn Book Fiction and Poetry Award, 2001 600 10 Carver, George Washington,|d1864?-1943|vPoetry. 600 11 Carver, George Washington,|d1864?-1943|vPoetry. 600 17 Carver, George Washington,|d1864?-1943|2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00011770 600 17 Carver, George W.|2swd 600 17 Carver, Raymond.|2swd 600 17 Carver, George Washington,|d1864?-1943|vPoetry.|2sears 648 7 Geschichte 1864-1945.|2swd 650 0 African American agriculturists|vPoetry. 650 0 Agriculturists|vPoetry. 650 0 American poetry. 650 1 African Americans|vPoetry. 650 1 Agriculturists|vPoetry. 650 1 American poetry. 650 7 African American agriculturists.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00799006 650 7 Agriculturists.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00801822 650 7 American poetry.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00807348 650 7 Bildung|2gnd|0(DE-588)4006650-2 650 7 Biografie|2gnd|0(DE-588)4006804-3 650 7 Jugendbuch|2gnd|0(DE-588)4306252-0 650 7 Sklaverei|2gnd|0(DE-588)4055260-3 650 7 Waisenkind|2gnd|0(DE-588)4139277-2 650 7 African Americans|vPoetry.|2sears 650 7 Agriculturists|vPoetry.|2sears 650 7 American poetry.|2sears 651 7 United States|xSüdstaaten|2gnd|0(DE-588)4078674-2 655 4 Young adult nonfiction. 655 4 Curriculum resource. 655 7 Narrative poetry.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01726682 655 7 Historical poetry.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01726465 655 7 Poetry.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01423828 655 7 Narrative poetry.|2lcgft 655 7 Historical poetry.|2lcgft 776 08 |iOnline version:|aNelson, Marilyn, 1946-|tCarver, a life in poems.|b1st ed.|dAsheville, N.C. : Front Street, ©2001 |w(OCoLC)606547606 856 41 |uhttp://www.frontstreetbooks.com 914 FARM78928 994 C0|bSTJ
