An inner-city riot breaks out when police attempt to stop a circus artist's high-rise show. A policeman waves a pistol, the man falls and people turn on the police. The novel follows the violence as it spills from the ghetto into the city and the reaction of those caught up in it: a Vietnam War vet blows up a gas station, while a prostitute discovers religion.
