For fourteen years, Dennis taught English and Afrikaans in South Africa. As the white minority government increased restrictions on the black population, he became involved in a series of anti-apartheid related activities, including efforts to end discrimination in sports. The government subsequently banned him from teaching, writing, publishing, attending social or political meetings, and pursuing his studies. In 1963, his refusal to abide by the ban resulted in eighteen months of hard labor on Robben Island, alongside Nelson Mandela. Forbidden to write or publish after his release, Brutus left South Africa in 1966 for England and then the United States, and is now recognized as one of the prominent voices in the anti-apartheid movement. -- Amazon. 600 10 Brutus, Dennis,|d1924-2009|vJuvenile literature. 600 11 Brutus, Dennis,|d1924-2009. 600 17 Brutus, Dennis,|d1924-2009|2fast|1https://id.oclc.org/ worldcat/entity/E39PBJtX74QykFMJ4qkfd68Hmd |0(OCoLC)fst01727567 648 7 1900-1999|2fast 650 0 Poets, South African|y20th century|vBiography|vJuvenile literature. 650 0 Human rights workers|zSouth Africa|vBiography|vJuvenile literature. 650 0 Anti-apartheid activists|zSouth Africa|vBiography |vJuvenile literature. 650 1 Poets. 650 1 Political activists. 650 1 Government, Resistance to|zSouth Africa. 650 1 Anti-apartheid activists. 650 1 Black people|vBiography. 650 7 JUVENILE NONFICTION / People & Places / Africa.|2bisacsh 650 7 JUVENILE NONFICTION / Biography & Autobiography / Cultural, Ethnic & Regional.|2bisacsh 650 7 JUVENILE NONFICTION / Diversity & Multicultural.|2bisacsh 650 7 Anti-apartheid activists|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00810309 650 7 Human rights workers|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00963353 650 7 Poets, South African|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01068048 651 7 South Africa|2fast|1https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/ E39PBJcWtkkqd3cMmFw9GBdYT3|0(OCoLC)fst01204616 655 2 Biography|0(DNLM)D019215 655 7 Biographies|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01919896 655 7 Juvenile works|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01411637 655 7 Biographies.|2lcgft 830 0 Discovering history's heroes. 914 FARM279956 994 C0|bCKE
