Summary Teresa and Carlo meet as young people in Trento, Italy during the Great War. She is a servant working in a villa and he is a young American who barely speaks Italian. Teresa finds a makeshift family and survives the occupation of the city during the war, while Carlo is ripped from his bed one night and conscripted into the invading Austrian army. They keep in touch by writing letters and reconnect after the war. But times are unsettled, and the same independence that has them dreaming of a future that didn't exist when they were children may pull them apart forever.
