Summary |
Disc 1. Enter the "hot zone" of one of the most frightful diseases on the planet--Ebola--as a dreaded outbreak of the deadly virus sweeps through a remote region of Zaire in May 1995. |
Disc 2. Since 1978, when he first became infected with HIV, Bob Massie's immune system has kept him completely healthy--without the help of drugs. His survival is sparking a whole new approach to surviving AIDS. |
Disc 3. In the last few decades, 40 new infectious diseases have emerged, and they travel the globe with unprecedented rapidity. Older killers that once seemed controllable are roaring back with a vengence. NOVA examines the most critical threats we face today and the pressing need to strengthen global public health systems. |
Disc 4. In 1906 in America it was first discovered that humans could transmit typhoid fever. This is a dramatization of the outbreak and a profile of Irish cook Mary Mallon, known as 'Typhoid Mary'. Quarantined against her will, the story reveals the newfound power of health officials to protect the masses, often at the expense of personal liberties. |
