Summary |
In 1988, Jerry Fielder, then Yousef Karsh's long-time studio assistant and currently Director of the Karsh Estate, sat down with the master photographer and taped over nine hours of recollections of many portrait sessions Karsh had experienced in his great career. Karsh spoke of his subjects and his early life, including much that had never been previously recorded. Drawing from the 1988 recordings, which have never before been made available, David Travis offers the reader and unparalleled tour through many of Karsh's iconic images. Travis constructs a compelling story of how this brilliant technician behind the camera also had remarkable psychological insight; Karsh worked on an emotional level rather than an analytical one. Thus, he seldom addressed in depth what he thought about his individual artistic experiences. Travis reveals this essential element by drawing not only from the anecdotes themselves, but also from the one thing that has been missing from all prior publications - the photographer's voice. |
