Summary Four decades after his death, Constantin Brancusi (1876-1957) remains perhaps the most revered of 20th-century sculptors. In his mature work, Brancusi defined a modern sensibility: he created drastically simplified shapes, stripped of realistic detail. Although considered a pioneer of abstract art, Brancusi himself claimed, "I never seek to make what they call a pure or abstract form". Brancusi documents the life and work of this remarkably original and important modern artist with reproductions of his best-known works, a well-researched biographical outline, and a selection of the artist's own illuminating photographs of his work and studio.
