Summary |
UNICEF was created by the United Nations in 1946 as a special agency to help the children of postwar Europe. In 1953, UNICEF became a more permanent program of the UN. By treating preventable diseases, preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS, helping children obtain a basic education, protecting children from violence and abuse, and keeping the spotlight on the rights of children, UNICEF tries to make the world a better place. Yet, enormous challenges remain, such as making sure that governments respect children's rights and provide resources for children. |
