Sugarman traveled as a journalist and illustrator with a group of northern students to Mississippi in the summer of 1964 to help register blacks to vote, and recounted his experience in Stranger at the Gates: A Summer in Mississippi. Here he tells more of that summer, and continues the story by describing his return visits to the Mississippi Delta in 1965 and October 2001. He also follows the subsequent lives of some of the students who were part of the effort.
