Summary |
This photograph is of an abandoned whaling station on the Faroe Islands. The islands are located in the North Atlantic, halfway between Norway and Iceland, though they are under theℓsovereignty of Denmark. Whaling is conducted in "drive hunts," where whales are herded by boats into a harbor for slaughter, and has taken place in the Faroe Islands since at least the 16th century.ℓThe primary whale taken in the hunts is the pilot whale, which is not considered an endangered species. Though the continuation of whale hunting is controversial, theℓFaroeseℓconsider it to be a part of their culture and history, as well as necessary for providing aℓsource ofℓfood. |
