Summary |
After the capital of Virginia was moved to Williamsburg in 1699ℓand most of the significant buildings in Jamestown wereℓburned, the townℓwas eventually forgotten, left to deteriorate in the elements. The exact location of the original town and palisade was lost and believed to be underwater. At the turn of the 20th century, there was a resurgence in interest in Jamestown and Virginia's early history. A seawall was built near the site of Jamestown, but it was not until 1994 that archaeologists discovered theℓremains of the town. Much of the archaeological integrity of the site was preserved by the construction of that seawall. Yonge's book, published in 1904, hoped to shed light on the site and the preservation efforts. It includes several useful maps and diagrams, as well as photographs of Jamestown ruins. |
