| Summary |
This letter, written in March 1865, claims to be a firsthand account of a young woman whose plantation was raided by Sherman's troops. According to her letter, the "vagabonds" arrived on March 9, 1865. At this point, Sherman's army was moving into North Carolina. He issued the following orders concerning the state: "All officers and soldiers of this command are reminded that the State of North Carolina was one of the last States that passed the ordinance of secession. And from the commencement of the war there has been in this State a strong union party...it should not be assumed that the inhabitants are enemies of our government, and it is to be hoped that every effort will be made to prevent any wanton destruction of property, or any unkind treatment of citizens." While the soldiers did burn, steal and destroy, according to Nellie's letter, the Union Officer in charge showed the family respect and courtesy and offered them his protection. |
