Knowlton is considered America's first intelligence professional (or professional spy)ℓand his unit, Knowlton's Rangers, made a significant contribution to intelligence gathering during the early days ofℓthe war. The modern U.S. Army’s intelligence service seal contains the date 1776, a reference to his unit.ℓUnfortunately,ℓKnowlton was killed in action at the Battle of Harlem Heights.
