In the popular Masterpiece Classic series Downton Abbey, a character observes that a fox hunt at the Downton estate is "like something out of a Trollope novel." After taking up the sport during his tenure in Ireland, Anthony Trollope not only began fox hunting avidly, but also became famous for the vivid depictions of hunting excursions he included in many of his novels. In this 1921 volume, Richard Greville Verney, the 19th Baron Willoughby de Broke, selected "a collection of prose and verse setting forth the sport of fox-hunting [as our ancestors] knew it," including a brief overview of Trollope's writings on the sport and passages from his novel The American Senator. With detailed pencil drawings and vibrant full-color plates, this volume is a fascinating read for anyone interested in the history of the once regal but now controversial sport. |
