Summary This illustration depicts Lagertha (Lathgertha), a ninth-century Danish Viking shield maiden and the wife of legendary Norse ruler Ragnar Lodbrok. She was said to possess a man's temper in a woman's body. Shield maidens, or female warriors, appear throughout Scandinavian folklore and mythology and may have been the basis for the Valkyries in Norse mythology. Once the Scandinavian countries were Christianized, however, records of women participating in warfare were less common.
