The aesthetics of wallpaper changed over time according to consumer needs and to what was considered to be in vogue. French wallpaper patterns dominated 18th- and 19th-century tastes until the 1870s, when designs from the Arts and Crafts movement in England became popular. William Morris, the leader of this movement, was a proponent of craftsman-made wallpaper as opposed to the new mechanized method. Morris and his company created wallpaper patterns that were abstract, stylized designs from nature. ℓDuring the Victorian era, wallpaper was the standard interior wall covering used by both the middle and upper classes in rural and urban areas.
