Summary While Walt Whitman had gained much success from his Leaves of Grass in 1855, his Drum-Taps, published in 1865, is thought to be his most personal work. A volume of poetry inspired by the American Civil War, Drum-Taps began when Whitman received news of his brother George being wounded in the Battle of Fredericksburg. After searching several hospitals, Whitman began writing down the stories of various soldiers he met along the way, leading to the collection of patriotic, war-time poems in Drum-Taps.
