Summary First published in 1918, The Return of the Soldier is Rebecca West's first novel. Telling the story of Captain Chris Baldry from the perspective of his cousin Jenny, the novel uncovers the trials soldiers faced when returning home after World War I. After Chris returns home, he finds his wife to be mourning the death of their infant son, that he still has feelings for his ex-love Margaret, and that his cousin Jenny is worried about his mental health. Battling a loss of memory and unable to distinguish memories and dreams from reality, Chris attempts to explain the psychological effects of war to the women in his life.
