No matter how the internal situation in Iraq evolves, its effects on the broader region will be felt for decades, presenting new challenges and opportunities for U.S. policy. A better understanding of how regional states and nonstate actors have responded to the Iraq conflict will better prepare the United States to manage the war's long-term consequences. To that end, the authors conducted extensive fieldwork in the region and canvassed local media sources to inform their analysis. Among their key findings: The war has facilitated the rise of Iranian power in the region, but Iran faces more limits than is commonly acknowledged; the war has eroded local confidence in U.S. credibility and created new opportunities for Chinese and Russian involvement; the war has entrenched and strengthened neighboring Arab regimes while diminishing the momentum for political reform; and the war has eroded al-Qa'ida's standing in the region, but the network and its affiliates are adapting with new tactics and strategies. 588 0 Print version record. 611 27 Iraq War (2003-2011)|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01802311 648 7 2003-2011|2fast 650 0 Iraq War, 2003-2011|xInfluence. 650 7 HISTORY|xMilitary.|2bisacsh 650 7 HISTORY|zAsia|xCentral Asia.|2bisacsh 650 7 Diplomatic relations.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01907412 650 7 Influence (Literary, artistic, etc.)|2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00972484 650 7 Strategic aspects of individual places.|2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01355062 650 7 Irakkriget 2003-|xinfluenser.|2sao 651 0 United States|xForeign relations|zMiddle East. 651 0 Middle East|xForeign relations|zUnited States. 651 0 Middle East|xStrategic aspects. 651 7 Iraq.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01205757 651 7 Middle East.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01241586 651 7 United States.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01204155 651 7 Middle East|xregional development.|2sipri 700 1 Wehrey, Frederic M. 710 2 Rand Corporation. 710 2 Project Air Force (U.S.) 776 08 |iPrint version:|tIraq effect.|dSanta Monica, CA : RAND, 2010|z9780833047885|w(DLC) 2009053859|w(OCoLC)495547106 830 0 Rand Corporation monograph series. 914 ocn560233073 994 92|bCKE
