520 1 "This qualitative research highlights an important (but
neglected) work and family issue - the experiences of full
-time workers who also care for a child suffering from
chronic illness or disability. The women in this study
share a sense of disconnection from those around them
because of the extreme responsibility of being the primary
(sometimes the sole) carer for the child, and because they
suffer from an ongoing and unacknowledged grief, and
because of the insensitivity or cruelty of those around
them, including their workplace colleagues. The women also
report on their approaches to survival, at work and at
home, and share uplifting stories of kindness and
resilience in the face of sometimes overwhelming
challenges. The stories are presented through narrative
explorations which include poems, interviews, fictional
diary entries and constructed vignettes. Students,
researchers and professionals in health care management,
gender studies, social policy and the sociology of the
family will find this a stimulating and disturbing
resource."--BOOK JACKET.
