Summary This publication presents the situation of women in science in five central European countries: the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia. With a brief outline of the pre-socialist and socialist periods, the current situation of women in research in each of the countries is examined. Statistical country profiles are presented on the share of women in educational and research paths by research sector and discipline, and in decision-making positions. Compared to the situation in the old member states, the percentage of women working in science is (in some cases significantly) higher in the new post-socialist countries. This fact, however, conceals what could be termed 'an exploitative model'—women work in the less funded research areas and sectors, and to a much greater extent as low-level laboratory personnel, and there is a steeper vertical segregation than in the West. At the same time, the percentage of women in technical disciplines and engineering, where investment is greatest, is very low. This is compounded by an almost complete lack of political attention and policy action in the areas of gender equality in science in the region. Another setback compared to some Western countries is the lack of organising on the part of women researchers. During the state socialist period, civic and professional women’s organisations were disbanded, and the countries did not experience the second wave of feminism which helped foster women researchers’ activism in the West.
