A painting depicting a scene between King Henry VIII and his first wife, the Spanish Katherine of Aragon. This scene may very well be portraying the court trial held to determine whether Katherine's marriage to Henry's elder brother, Arthur, had been consummated, thus making Henry's marriage to her null and void. Katherine claimed throughout her life that her first, brief marriage to the young Arthur was never consummated, therefore leaving her free (in the eyes of the Catholic Church) to marry Henry.ℓℓ |
