Summary |
After the staggering speed with which Nazi Germany occupied Europe, it took the allies some time to regroup and mount an offensive to take back the continent. These three key battlefields turned the tide for the Allies, and hastened the end of the Third Reich's reign of terror. Each episode includes rare archival footage from each battle represented. |
Battle for North Africa: Operation Torch, the Battle for North Africa opened the way against entrenched German forces led by Erwin Rommel, the Desert Fox, and provided Allied troops with invaluable battle experience, paving theway for the enventual Allied invation of Europe itself. |
Battle for Italy: When victory in North Africa seemed assured, Allied planners turned their attention to Italy what Churchill called "The soft underbelly of Europe." It turned out to be far from soft. After fierce resistance in some of the most frenzied battles of the war, the Allies defeated Italy, captured Rome and pushed the Germans into retreat. |
Battle of Normandy: D-Day was the largest amphibious operation in history, but even after the Allied troops successfully captured the beachhead of Normand, they still had to face a foe whose resilience and tenacity was legendary. |
