Space, Earth & atmospher The award-winning Tell Me Why series, based on the books by Arkady Leokum, gives informative and easy to understand answers to the many types of questions that children ask about everyday subjects, in a simple and entertaining manner. This program answers questions such as "How big is the universe?" "What makes the stars shine?" and "Why does the moon change shape?"
Exploration of the solar system Since the beginning of space exploration in the 1950s, dozens of celestial bodies in the solar system have received a visit from probes. Learn about some of these space probes, that voyaged to the sun and to various planets, and about the data they sent back to Earth.
The atmosphere The atmosphere is the gaseous envelope that surrounds Earth. Although the atmosphere is a very thin layer, it plays an essential role in protecting the planet from solar rays and retaining some of their energy. The two main gases of the atmosphere are nitrogen and oxygen. Water vapor is found in the troposphere, the stage for most weather phenomena.
The Milky Way Our solar system is located in a galaxy with an evocative name: The Milky Way. From Earth, the Milky Way looks like a narrow strip of milky white. From outer space, it looks completely different--with a central bulb, which contains tens of billions of sstars, and a thin disc, formed of stars coiled into spiral arms. Our solar system is the Orion Arm.
The size of the universe The Universe is gigantic; measured distances are inconceivable on a human scale. The real size of the Universe remains a mystery. Observe a Russian nesting doll presentation that illustrates how the Universe is composed, from clusters of galaxies to quark particles.
The structure of the universe The Universe came into existence about 15 billion years ago, following the Big Bang. Today, the Universe is composed of billions of galaxies. Our galaxy, the Milky Way, contains billions of stars, including the sun, around which Earth orbits.
