Summary This painting depicts the pre-Socratic Greek philosopher Heraclitus, who, due to his solitary life, riddling philosophy and dislike of humankind in general, is often known as "the Obscure" and the "Weeping Philosopher." He is famous for his insistence that the universe is ever-changing and is known to have said "no man ever steps in the same river twice."
