Summary This oil painting depicts the Italian cardinal archbishop of Milan, Charles Borromeo, giving communion to plague victims. There was a famine in Milan in 1576 due to crop failures, with a large outbreak of plague following the famine. Borromeo stayed in the city when most others fled, caring for the sick and trying to feed the 60,000–70,000 hungry and ill people in the city, driving himself into debt in the process.ℓ
