Summary |
"The tale of the 47 ronin ... is the classic true story of samurai honor. In the year 1701, a young clan lord is forced to commit seppuku (ritual suicide) after being provoked into striking a court official. His loyal followers, now 'ronin' (masterless samurai), dedicate their lives to avenging him. After spending a year patiently planning their vengeance, and waiting for their target to relax his guard, they launch a furious assault on his heavily defended estate, knowing full well that the penalty for failure will be the same as the reward for success ...." -- Container. |

"It was customary during the Edo period (1600-1868) for the imperial court in Kyōto to send envoys bearing New Year's greetings to the shōgun in Edo (now Tōkyō). In 1701 Asano [Naganori, lord of Akō domain] was asked to serve as shogunal representative to receive the envoys. The shogun's chief of protocol was Kira [Yoshinaka], who, it is believed, treated Asano superciliously and failed to advise him properly on unfamiliar points of protocol. On the third day of the reception, Asano, provoked by Kira's arrogance, drew his sword and attacked him in the shogunal castle. Because the act of drawing a sword in Edo Castle was illegal, Asano was ordered to commit suicide, and his domain in province of Harima (now part of Hyōgo Prefecture) was confiscated by the shogunate.... As punishment [for killing Kira], the 46 samurai [(one dropped out just before the raid in January 1703)], ranging in age from 15 to 77, were ordered to commit suicide, which they did in March 1703." -- Japan: An Illustrated Encyclopedia (Tokyo: Kodansha, 1993), 1:404-405. |
