Summary Most of the Socratic dialogues that come down to us were written by Socrates’ student Plato. This volume collects the works of another of Socrates’ students, Xenophon. Among histories of Athens and the “Anabasis,” a thrilling tale of ancient warfare in which Socrates makes an appearance, this book contains Xenophon’s own accounts of Socrates’ teachings, trial and death. Unlike the dialogues of Plato, Xenophon’s Socrates is more likely to give practical advice than to ask probing philosophical questions. Xenophon spends a great deal of this book defending Socrates from his critics, and seeks to vindicate his teacher.
