Summary While Tubman's activities with the Underground Railroad are well known, she was also a very successful Union spy. In the spring of 1863, she was responsible for organizing short expeditions into South Carolina where the Union forces were in need of information relating to Confederate troop placement, movement and numbers. She recruited former slaves from the area and even led several expeditions, often disguised as a field laborer. Tubman later served as a guide forâ„“Colonel James Montgomery and the African American Second South Carolina Volunteers' raiding party. Thanks to Tubman's knowledge and guidance, the Volunteers were able to surprise the Confederates, take thousands of dollars' worth of supplies and free 800 slaves.â„“
