520 Spohni's romanticized portrayal of Pocahontas' weddingℓwas
published during the Victorian era. While he did not seem
to be overly concerned with historical detail, the scene
highlights several important aspects of the event. John
Rolfe was a crucial figure at Jamestown, both as a leader
and as a pioneer. It was Rolfe who first introduced
tobacco as a potential cash crop. To the right of the
scene, an English settler is shaking hands with, one
presumes, ChiefℓWahunsonacock (or Chief Powhatan, as he
was known toℓthe English), Pocahontas' father. The
marriage brought together warring factions and ushered
       inℓa period of relative peace.ℓ
