Summary |
This painting depicts the bridge that Caesar built across the Rhine River. In order to secure the Eastern border of Gaul from the marauding Germanic tribes, Caesar had a bridge built since the tribes often used the river as a way to attack and then flee from retaliation from the Romans. In book four of Caesar's commentaries, he gives great detail of the bridge's double-piling wooden construction. The bridge was meant to show that Caesar, and indeed Rome, could go anywhere.ℓ |
