520 This 19th-century history of the Protestant Reformation in
Germany covers Martin Luther's activities from the start
of the 16th century to the Edict of Worms, which declared
him a heretic. This period of Luther's life was marked by
vast and rapid change. His 95 theses, originally written
in Latin as a scholarly objection to current church
practices, were translated into German and became a
popular manifesto of protest. Luther formulated his famous
doctrine of "sola fide," or justification by faith alone,
and later rejected papal authority altogether. This led to
him being branded a heretic and excommunicated by Pope Leo
       X.
