Summary |
Stephen Crane describes some of the world's greatest historical battles in his impressionistic style in this handsomely illustrated volume. This was one of the final works he completed before his early death. Crane was never a solider himself, but war fascinated him, not so much for the violence or glory, but more for the way it introduced powerful contradictions into normal lives and exposed the more complex aspects of human nature. In addition to being a prolific writer, Crane was a skilled researcher, and these sketches reveal an understanding of his subjects that is remarkable considering how personally removed from them he was. These sketches read like short action films, with an emphasis on drama and excitement. |
