Summary |
Before its almost complete destruction by fire in 1698, the Palace of Whitehall was the largest and most complex palace in Europe, boasting more than 1,500 rooms, making it even larger than Versailles. It had been the principal residence of the English monarchs in London since the 16th century. The only remaining part of the structure today is the Banqueting House, designed by architect Inigo Jones in 1622. |
