Summary This short biography of Harriet Tubman describes her time serving as a spy and scout for the Union Army. She provided valuable intelligence to military officers about Confederate troop movement and numbers. She led several missions behind enemy lines, but also commanded a team of nine former slaves and river pilots who acted as spies. Her handler, Colonel Montgomery, wrote of her, "I wish to commend to your attention, Mrs. Harriet Tubman, a most remarkable woman and invaluable as a scout."
