       español, desarrolló toda su carrera en Italia. Fue 
       considerado maestro indiscutible por la escuela de Nápoles
       , que él mismo contribuyó a crear. Su estilo naturalista 
       evolucionó desde el tenebrismo de Caravaggio hasta 
       estéticas más luminosas y coloristas, con influencias de 
       Van Dyck y otros maestros. La actividad de José de Ribera 
       como grabador se agrupa en un período corto de ocho años 
       (1616- 1630), siendo su producción breve y escasa, pero de
       gran calidad e importancia para su momento y generaciones 
       posteriores. Sólo dieciséis estampas se le pueden atribuir
       con certeza; en ellas se tratan temas religiosos, estudios
       anatómicos, mitológicos y algún retrato.ℓ ElℓSileno 
       borrachoℓes un ejemplo de las estampas de temas 
       mitológicos. Grabada en 1628 y basada en uno de sus 
       cuadros realizado en 1626, esta estampa conoce tres 
       estados distintos: en el primero sólo aparecen la firma y 
       la fecha; en el segundo se añade una dedicatoria en el 
       centro de la parte inferior, debajo de los ropajes de 
       Sileno, y en el tercer estado aparece el nombre del editor
       y una dedicatoria añadida en la esquina inferior 
       izquierda. Se conocen varias copias de esta estampa. La 
       que aquí se expone corresponde al segundo estado; en ella 
       aparece la firma de Ribera que recoge el patronímico 
       latino de su país, su provincia y su ciudad de nacimiento 
       ?Hispanus (España), Valentinus (Valencia), Satabensis 
       (Játiva)? y el nombre griego del lugar donde se realiza la
       estampa, Partenope (Nápoles). La plancha de cobre fue 
       adquirida en 1649 por un editor romano, es posible que 
       Ribera la vendiera a Orlando, quien terminó por vendérsela
       a Giacomo de Rossi, de ahí que la inscripción dedicatoria 
       esté firmada por Giovanni Orlando de Roma y no por Ribera.
       En 1738 fue comprada por la Calcografia Nazionale de Roma,
       donde se conserva actualmente.ℓℓ  ℓEnglish: ℓJosé de

       developed his entire career in Italy. He was considered 
       the undisputed master of the school of Naples, which he 
       helped create. His naturalistic style evolved from

       borrachoℓis an example of his mythological works. Engraved
       in 1628 and based on one of his paintings done in 1626, 
       this work underwent three different states: the first 
       shows only the signature and the date; in the second, an 
       inscription was added at the bottom, and the third state 
       shows the name of the publisher and a dedication in the 
       lower left corner. Several copies of this work are known. 
       The one here corresponds to the second state, showing 
       Ribera's signature with the Latin patronymic of his 
       country, his province and his city of birth(?) Hispanus 
       (Spain), Valentinus (Valencia), Satabensis (Xativa)(?) and
       the Greek name of the place where the picture is, 
       Partenope (Naples). The copper plate was acquired in 1649 
       by a Roman editor; he probably sold it to Orlando Ribera, 
       who ended up selling it to Giacomo Rossi, hence the 
       dedicatory inscription signed by Giovanni Orlando to Rome 
       and not by Ribera. In 1738, it was bought by the 
       Calcografia Nazionale in Rome, where it is currently kept.
