Shortly thereafter, President James Polk proposed that Mexico sell its northern half to the U.S. Hostilities commenced and the U.S. crossed the border to occupy Matamoras, U.S. warships landed troops at Veracruz, who fought their way overland to Mexico City. Santa Anna led a defending army, but the Mexicans were overwhelmed. In the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Mexico sold its northern territories to the U.S. for $15 million. For Mexico, the war was a traumatic event that resulted in the loss of many lives, half its territory, and a great deal of pride and hope for the future. However, it brought together a people who still were struggling with what it meant to be Mexican, just 20 years after achieving independence from Spain. This film examines both sides of a conflict that changed the shape of nations and left a legacy that endures to this day. 538 DVD, NTSC ; region 1; full screen presentation, preserving the aspect ratio of original television exhibition; stereo. 546 In English or Spanish; closed-captioned in English. 600 10 Santa Anna, Antonio López de,|d1794-1876. 600 10 Scott, Winfield,|d1786-1866. 600 10 Taylor, Zachary,|d1784-1850. 600 17 Santa Anna, Antonio López de,|d1794-1876.|2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00019533 600 17 Scott, Winfield,|d1786-1866.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00036446 600 17 Taylor, Zachary,|d1784-1850.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst00002365 647 7 Mexican War|d(1846-1848)|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01019173 648 7 1815-1861|2fast 650 0 Mexican War, 1846-1848. 650 0 Mexican War, 1846-1848|xCauses. 650 1 Spanish language materials. 650 7 Diplomatic relations.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01907412 650 7 Territorial expansion.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01355135 650 7 War|xCauses.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01170331 651 0 Mexico|xHistory|y1821-1861. 651 0 United States|xTerritorial expansion. 651 0 United States|xHistory|y1815-1861. 651 0 United States|xForeign relations|zMexico. 651 0 Mexico|xForeign relations|zUnited States. 651 7 Mexico.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01211700 651 7 United States.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01204155 655 2 Documentaries and Factual Films.|0(DNLM)D019499 655 7 Television programs.|2lcgft 655 7 Documentary television programs.|2lcgft 655 7 Historical television programs.|2lcgft 655 7 Video recordings for the hearing impaired.|2lcgft 655 7 Television programs.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01726253 655 7 Historical television programs.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01726125 655 7 Documentary television programs.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01710387 655 7 History.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01411628 655 7 Documentary films.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01710390 655 7 Nonfiction television programs.|2fast|0(OCoLC)fst01710270 655 7 Video recordings for the hearing impaired.|2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01710450 655 7 Documentary films.|2lcgft 655 7 Nonfiction television programs.|2lcgft 655 7 Historical|vTelevision series.|2migfg 655 7 Documentary|vTelevision series.|2migfg 700 1 Martin, Ginny,|edirector,|eproducer,|ecinematographer, |eFilm editor. 700 1 Tranchin, Rob,|eproducer,|escreenwriter. 700 1 Moore, Allen,|d1952-|ecinematographer. 700 1 Bryant, John|c(Percussionist),|ecomposer. 700 1 Hames, Frank,|ecomposer. 700 1 Stone, George,|eresearcher. 700 1 Boardman, Andrea,|eproducer. 700 1 DuBose, Bruce,|enarrator. 700 1 Ackerman, Will,|d1949- 700 1 Amado, Al. 700 1 Bailey, G.
