Summary “Won in the Ninth” is a story about a college baseball team in the early 20th century. It is quite unique to other baseball fiction of the era because its author, Christopher “Christy” Mathewson, is one of the greatest players of all time. Mathewson (1880-1925) began his career at the age of 14 playing semi-professional baseball. By 19, he was in the minor leagues and before long, he was picked up by the New York Giants and became a major league pitcher. In the course of his 17 year career, he went on to record 373 wins, 2,507 strikeouts and 79 shutouts. In 1936, he was one of five inaugural inductees to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Mathewson published “Won in the Ninth” in 1910 and was lauded for his thrilling descriptions of games and the recognizable styles of many of the team’s players. At the end of the story, he includes a guide to his dangerous “fade away” pitch known today as a screwball. This fun and action packed tale is a can’t-miss piece of baseball’s history by one of its first all-time greats.
